Position Summary

The GIS Technician supports Fatbeam’s fiber projects and GIS operations by performing essential field and office tasks, focusing on collecting, updating, and maintaining accurate geospatial records. Working alongside the GIS Analyst, this role is responsible for As-Builts, splice documentation, re-design work, and helping review or update designs using tools such as Comsof or other design software. The Technician helps ensure the precise documentation and data integrity is essential for successful FTTH deployments and ongoing network management. This position will be located in our Coeur d’Alene, ID office and will report to our Director of Digital Transformation & Automation.

Position Responsibilities

  • Collect, organize, and update As-Built records for fiber projects, ensuring traceable and accurate documentation.
  • Prepare and maintain splice documentation and records, including electronic and paper formats.
  • Support project re-design tasks as directed by engineering or GIS staff—assist with revisions and markups in fiber layouts, maps, and diagrams.
  • Assist with data entry, editing, and maintenance in GIS platforms such as 3-GIS, ArcGIS Online, and Comsof, under the direction of the GIS Analyst.
  • Review telecom facilities maps and records—both underground and aerial—to verify accuracy and support the design or construction process.
  • Support the GIS Analyst and design team in understanding and utilizing Comsof or other design tools for FTTH projects.
  • Aid in compiling and updating maps, reports, and related design documents required for project tracking or permits.
  • Perform basic spatial analysis and map preparation as requested.
  • Assist with survey data review, aerials, and project field verification when required.
  • Help integrate or convert files, such as AutoCAD and Google Earth formats, to ensure project records remain current.
  • Provide occasional user support or training for GIS system users, following guidelines provided.

Education/Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical certification or coursework in GIS, CAD, or related field preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Experience/Minimum Requirements

  • 1+ years’ experience in GIS, surveying, or utility documentation preferred.
  • Experience with ESRI products (ArcGIS, ArcPro, ArcGIS Online) and/or 3-GIS is a plus.
  • Experience documenting fiber or other telecom infrastructure preferred.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of telecommunications concepts is beneficial.
  • Willingness to travel locally as needed and perform occasional overnight stays.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
  • Ability to communicate professionally in person and in writing.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a project team.
  • Willingness to learn new tools, technical workflows, and fiber documentation practices.

Additional information

Fatbeam requires a background check and the acceptance of a basic non-compete documents for all employees. The background check takes 3-5 days. This offer would be pending upon the results of the background check. We will also need to confirm that your driving record will not prohibit us from adding you to our insurance policy for company vehicles.
